Learning Outcome:

Students in this course obtain an overview of some current questions and methods of higher algebra and discrete mathematics. Moreover, they have developed a deeper understanding of algebra and discrete mathematics and are capable of analyzing and solving typical problems from these areas.

Contents:

This class covers fundamental methods of modern algebra and algebraic combinatorics. The following particular topics will be covered:

* Simplicial complexes and their homology and cohomology.

* Group cohomology.

* Convex polyhedra and polytopes.

* Matroids.

Methods:

Regular written and/or oral contribution by participants.

Assessment:

The grade will be determined by regular and qualified participation, number of exercises solved and presentation of the solutions.

Remarks:

In the summer term 2023, this course will take place with an emphasis on algebraic geometry. Master students, for whom this course is required, can choose when to take it depending on their preference.
