This course gives students an insight into basic research on visual attention. The participants will learn the basics of visual perception and attention and get to know the prevailing debates in this traditional and still very active field of research. The most relevant paradigms in visual attention research will be discussed and important concepts of visual attention will be presented by the students and the teacher.

The theoretical and biological foundations of visual perception and attention, as well as the most recent debates in the field of research are dealt with (e.g. bottom-up vs. top-down mechanisms of attention control). Findings from the most relevant paradigms and different research methods (behavioral, eye-tracking, EEG) will be presented and discussed. Connections between visual attention and working memory are examined.
