 Students will be introduced to the (neuro)biological consequences of early life stress in the context of clinical psychology and psychiatry. A critical revision of the current state of the literature will be held continiously throughout the seminar. For this, students are asked to independently extract information from topic-specific scientific literature. 

In this seminar participants will learn how early adverse experiences become biologically embedded. First it is introduced that early life stress predisposes to the development of mental disorders, including PTSD and depression. Then, the (neuro)biological changes after early stress exposure will be presented using the current state of the literature. We will address the consequences of early life stress on structural brain morphology and functional brain activity, the functioning of the neuroendocrine-, immune- and metabolic systems, cellular aging and the development of the gut-brain axis. Finally, we will consider how resilience factors and lifestyle-related interventions targeting these biological systems can protect against the adverse consequences of early stress exposure.
