Students can explain how a psychiatric risk can be passed on to the next generation. A critical revision of the current state of the literature will be held continuously throughout the seminar. For this, students are asked to independently extract information from topic-specific scientific literature.

In this seminar participants will learn how the risk for psychiatric disorders is transmitted into the next generation. First the concept of fetal programming is introduced. Then, we will address the consequences of prenatal stress, early life stress and chronic stressors on child developmental trajectories and consider the role of attachment and maternal sensitivity. Also, the risk for transgenerational transmission of maltreatment will be discussed. Additionally, the role of gene-environment interactions and epigenetics in the transmission of stress-related disease risk will be explained. Finally, we will discuss epidemiological examples in humans.
