  • Overview over physiological and pathophysiological molecular processes in humans 
  • Advanced understanding of the structure, metabolism and molecular function of biomolecules in the cellular context
  • Limited insights into central metabolic pathways of plants and bacteria
  • Knowledge of the principles behind biochemical, cell biological and molecular biological methods 
  • Understanding the link between signaling cascades and metabolic pathways to assess systemic outcomes 
  • Basic knowledge about the linkage to common human diseases and therapeutic strategies
  • Structure and function of biomolecules (carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, peptides, proteins, nucleosides, nucleotides, nucleic acids), including enzymes and cofactors
  • Organization of cells and basic cellular processes: biomembranes, transmembrane transport, cell compartments, vesicular transport, cytoskeleton, cell cycle, programmed cell death 
  • Reactions, mechanisms, regulation and bioenergetics of the carbohydrate, lipid, amino acid, energy, nucleotide, and heme metabolism 
  • Molecular biology with focus on DNA replication, mutations, DNA repair, transcription, and translation 
  • Cellular communication, among others via nuclear receptors, G-protein-coupled receptors, receptor kinases, and receptors with death domains
