The participants acquire an advanced basis for PhD research in the doctoral school "Atoms, Light & Molecules". Students will get an insight into interdisciplinary and applied research. Students will learn how physical principles can be applied to life sciences. Students will be able to determine links between physics and life sciences and utilize these connections for possible applications.

Special topics in AMO Physics: This course offers an insight into the field of life-science from a physical point of view. Life-science is a very interdisciplinary field and it includes branches such as biotechnology, food science or pharmacology. In this course, the question “How can physics contribute to different aspects of life-sciences?” will be addressed. Discussed topics include the areas of photobiology, biophotonics and nanobiotechnology. The course covers among others the physics behind photosynthesis, super-resolution microscopy and the synthesis of metal nanoparticle with microorganism. Next to recent research results, possible applications will be discussed. Furthermore, emerging technologies in life-sciences that have a strong physical basis will be examined.

Course contents: Introduction to the fields of biophotonics, photobiology and nanobiotechnology Physical principals  in life sciences - nonthermal preservation methods, -  physics and molecular biology. - emerging technologies Light in life sciences - interaction of life and light, - physics behind photosynthesis, - light as at tool for researchers in life sciences Nanotechnology in life sciences - microbial nanobiotechnology, - biosynthesis of nanoparticles, - applications of nanotechnology in life sciences
