In this design studio, students will obtain and deepen their knowledge and experience with contemporary and advanced urban and architectural digital design processes. Successful students will organize, conceptualize, and develop their design thesis within a given design brief, taking their project through all design stages from early research to representational drawings and models to present their final design to their peers, invited jurors and a public audience.

“Cultural Complexity: Spaces for Contemporary Museological Practice”. Despite the unprecedented expansion of the field of arts and its concepts, forms, modes of representation, and media throughout the last two-hundred years, the museum as a typology has remained surprisingly stable since its introduction as a Western cultural concept in the late 19th century. Recent changes in the way in which art is produced, collected, curated, and understood nowadays, however, have called this dated concept into question.
Using the urban site and building of the Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum as an architectural testing ground, students are asked to investigate contemporary museological challenges such as innovative curating strategies, digital art, hybrid modes of display and presentation, new models of ownership and funding in a changing socio-economic environment, museum education in the age of virtuality, artists’ agency, and public artistic participation, and to speculate about their conceptual, programmatic, formal, material, architectural, and spatial implications, towards the design of novel and innovative cultural spaces.
In this process of design research, the museum as such is questioned on two different levels: as a building with its traditional typology and as an institution within a broader contemporary socio-cultural context.

Students will work in groups to present and discuss their material once a week in a desk crit or PowerPoint presentation. Work includes research, analysis, and synthesis in order to deduct and organize one's ideas to form a coherent architectural proposal. Design research is conducted via digital and physical models.

Students' progress on research, model building, digital modelling skills and design will be evaluated week by week, putting the focus on specific milestones, such as quarter review (end of research phase) and miterm review. Students will present their final design to a jury at the end of the year and submit this digital presentation for grading. Final Grading will assess the quantity and quality of presentation, design, research, and models.
