• Basic knowledge of the theories of supererogation, as well as a deepened understanding of ethics.

• Acquisition of basic, exegetical skills, as well as the ability to grasp complex, argumentative structures.

Do I have a duty to perform any morally good action? Self-sacrifice appears to be applaudable, but are we ever obliged to opt for this measure? In other words: is supererogation possible? In the course of this seminar, we will deal with the different debates about this issue which have taken place in the analytic tradition of philosophy. We will, inter alia, tackle questions surrounding the correct definition of supererogation, as well as several paradoxes which philosophers have identified as a consequence of alloqing the possibility of supererogative acts.

Autonomous work on understanding texts; presentations; group-discussion.
