222041 SE Systematic Theology: Exemplary Examination of a Topic: What is legitimate? On the ethics of peace and war
winter semester 2022/2023 | Last update: 20.05.2022 | Place course on memo listKnowledge of the central concepts, theories and discussions of the ethics of peace and military force: just war theory (ius ad bellum), the doctrine of the right conduct in war (ius in bello), the biblical idea of non-violence, pacifism, the responsibility to protect, etc.
Because of Russia’s war against Ukraine the ethics of peace and war is highly topical again. Therefore, the seminar aims to open up the central philosophical-ethical issues of peace ethics. The Christian perspective will be taken into account in the first sessions which focus on violence, war and the call to non-violence in the Bible. After that, the seminar proceeds through the history of philosophy. This approach gives the opportunity for a systematic discussion of the central concepts of peace ethics (ius ad bellum, ius in bello etc.). Modern issues will be treated at the end of the semester: nuclear conflicts, responsibility to protect, use of drones etc.
Interpretation of texts, class room discussions.
