Basic knowledge of a philosophy of the art of living; knowledge of concepts of happiness and the so-called cardinal virtues (prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance).

In ancient European ethics, the question of the good life was considered to be the central question of practical philosophy and ethics. Today, ethicists often deal with minimum standards of social justice. This seminar focusses on the ancient question of how to life a good life. Josef Pieper’s book "Das Viergespann", which was very successful in the 20th century, as well as selected ancient, medieval and modern texts (e.g. by Seneca, Thomas Aquinas and O. Höffe) serve as reference texts for the seminar.

Interpretation of texts, class room discussions.

Short papers and final paper.

To be announced at the beginning of the course.
