Knowledge of competing conceptions of the Common Good; ability to judge about its significance with regard to selected issues in Medical Ethics; knowledge of arguments in various other critical topics of Moral Theology (abortion, assisted suicide, etc.).

This seminar for doctoral students offers the opportunity to discuss competing concepts of the Common Good. In pluralistic societies, there is no common idea of the Good Life. However, it might still be necessary to refer to some idea of the Common Good. Can the idea of the Common Good still provide orientation? Discussions will include selected topics from Medical Ethics such as Covid 19, assisted suicide, etc. The second half of the course will give the opportunity to elaborate and discuss some central conflictual issues (abortion, assisted suicide etc.) in Moral Theology.

Study of texts, interpretation of texts, class room discussions.

Participation in class room discussions, final paper.

To be announced at the beginning of the course.

None.
