winter semester 2022/2023 | Last update: 21.03.2023 | Place course on memo listUnderstanding the celebration of Easter before the background of the biblical testimonies and the historical development
The Old Testament Passover has been, after the destruction of the temple, transformed in a twofold manner: into the Jewish (rabbinic) seder pesach and into the Christian feast of Easter. The lecture will provide basic informations about passover in the Old Testament and in early Judaism, about Easter in the first three centuries of the Christian era and in the church of Jerusalem since the 4th century as well as the shape of Easter in the present day Roman rite. Some liturgical texts and chants will be analysed more accurately.
Lecture, possibility to pose questions
written (alternatively oral) examination including the study of selected secondary literature (to be announced at the beginning of the semester)
