Transnational family life: Sub-Saharan families in Innsbruck negotiate family practices

Migration has a significant impact on family dynamics and roles: through migration, family units are fragmented and reconstructed, family roles and responsibilities are transformed and renegotiated and long-distance intimacy and care is sustained via transnational practices.
Through this project we will explore the way in which migration and transnationalism affect family life: we will use an ethnographic, participatory method to elicit how Sub-Saharan parents describe what family is, the ways in which they experience and narrate the transformation affecting their household due to migration, how they work to sustain certain identities within the walls of the home, how they negotiate their roles as parents and the relation with the other family members, how they contribute to create transnational ties and the role that these ties play in the process of “doing family”.
We will focus on qualitative, participatory methods, where research participants become deeply involved in the research process and data collection.

Short lectures, discussions, small group work, written assignments, internal and public presentations, written reports on the results.

Participation in both group- and plenary work, presentations, written reports. Details will be provided during the course.
