432051 PS Economic and Social History: Global Entanglements
winter semester 2022/2023 | Last update: 26.08.2022 | Place course on memo listAbility for deepened explanation of selected topics of economic and social history including a historically grounded analysis of the present.
We are obviously in a period of historical disruption, characterized by intensifying crisis. To the general problem of development at least a climate crisis as existential threat, several economic crisis influencing necessary adaptation, and recently also an aggravating crises of democratic government.
To better understand the situation and possible solutions we will concern with long-run historical developments and cultural imprints, a deliberate global perspective and a critical dabte of history by the use of case studies and their synopsis.
Input by the instructor, written PS-paper and presentations by students (group work), essay, discussions
oral (presentations, collaboration) and written (PS-paper)
Crucial prerequisite for participation are interest in the topic and openness for an interdisciplinary approach. Participation in the connected lecture is recommended (and necessary if the whole module is to be completed).
The actual proceedings of the PS will be subject to the current Covid situation during the whole semester. Hence, follow information in OLAT and check your uibk-e-mails! The regular schedule is to proceed in the seminar room, but rescheduling to online-teaching will probably be necessary. However, there will NOT be a hybrid format. The first unit at October 4 will anyway be "online only" and participation is compulsory to confirm your enrolment. To enter the PS later is also possible in case of free capacities, but the only way to achieve that is to participate in the Sowi-Computeranmeldung.
Students from programs other than economics, especially from sociology, political science and history, are explicitly welcome due to the interdisciplinary character of the course. In these cases, enrollment for the PS is also necessary online, later enrollment in person will not be possible in this semester.
