Survey of the history of cultures in the Mediterranean region and Europe from the beginnings to the Renaissance. Understanding of the emergence of cultural narratives (philosophy, religion, art, architecture), their mutual interconnections and transformations across different cultural spaces.

The course will provide a survey of the cultural history of Europe including perspectives on its oriental roots from its beginnings to the Renaissance. The aim of the course is to show the interconnections of profane history with cultural narratives, be they (polytheistic or monotheistic) religions or philosophical interpretations of the world, and the production of art and architecture. Special attention will be paid to the emergence of world views from the specific perception of nature by humans ("nature becomes culture"), their modification and their transformation through cultural spaces.
