The proseminar focuses on Adalbert Stifter's work as a school inspector, educational theorist and author of an outstanding educational novel in the years 1848-1857. We will first get to know Stifter's official work and his journalism. The text excerpts reveal Stifter's philosophy of education and his concrete practice, his work in schools and in his dealings with teachers, which sometimes deviated strongly from his philosophy.
Stifter initially celebrated successes, but then suffered humiliating defeats. He channelled his frustration into his new favourite project, the novel Der Nachsommer (1857), which can be read in the seminar both as a literary outstanding genre representative of the Bildungsroman and as a reaction to the sobering bureaucratic reality in school administrations.
