Ability for in-depth analysis and interpretation as well as for genre-theoretical analyzes and for the literary-historical classification and contextualization of a narrative. Ability to present the results of research in a written paper in a conclusive manner that complies with scientific standards.

This PS has three focal points: 1. we will examine literary works (poetry, prose, play, essay, literature for children and young readers) that deal with the Austrian past in the National-Socialist era. Ilse Aichinger: Aufruf zum Misstrauen (1946), some poems by Christine Busta (1950er), Hans Lebert: Die Wolfshaut (1960), Christine Nöstlinger: Maikäfer, flieg! (1973) or Elfriede Jelinek: Burgtheater (1985). These oeuvres and the therein expressed view on the Austrian past were well ahead of their time; even in 1985, "Burgtheater" was considered an "anti-Austrian concoction". 2. we examine the Austrian literary landscape after the war: What were the continuities to the NS and how long were they effective? Who were the protagonists, who got the literary prizes, and who was in the juries? 3. the "hands-on" part of the course: How do I find a literary source in a literary archive? Where is the source from? When was it produced? Who did it, for whom, and to what end? To find the answers to these questions often requires skills of detection, commensense and knowledge of (literary) history. The answers will probably lead us to new interpretations of literature. The archival sources will be selected according to our area of interest.
