Learning Outcome:

Students will be made aware of the different linguistic strategies that are employed in English to communicate indirectly; these will be the object of analysis and will be connected to general pragmatic phenomena, such as epistemic stance and involvement/distancing. Students will enhance their knowledge of these phenomena, which are often neglected in language studies.

Contents:

The different linguistic strategies used to signal and frame indirect communication will be analysed, in particular in relation to individual items that have become widespread in recent times. Through developing their own projects, students will be able to investigate some of these phenomena directly.
