609106 PS Systemic and/or Applied English Linguistics: The Pragmatics of Quoting
winter semester 2022/2023 | Last update: 14.06.2022 | Place course on memo listStudents will be made aware of the different linguistic strategies that are employed in English to refer to speech by other speakers; all the devices to quote, refer to, report and comment what others say will be the object of analysis and will be connected to general pragmatic phenomena, such as epistemic stance and involvement/distancing. The ways in which we report or refer to what others say can actually convey information about our own opinion on what we are reporting (epistemic stance) and, in some cases, on the reliability of the source (involvement/distancing). Students will enhance their knowledge of these phenomena, which are often neglected in language studies.
The different linguistic strategies used to signal and frame the reporting and quoting of others’ speech will be analysed, in particular in relation to individual items that have become widespread in recent times, e.g. quotative like, and in relation to specific text-types such as literary texts, tweets and re-tweets, academic language, newspaper language. Through developing their own projects, students will be able to investigate some of these phenomena directly.
Single presentation, discussions, proseminar paper on individual project.
Regular attendance (presence at the first session is mandatory), incl. at workshop, obligatory readings, participation on discussion and regular report on research progress, short presentation, term paper.
