Students will familiarize themselves with key concepts, trends, and directions in the field of Gender Studies. They will train the reading of theoretical texts and practice how to apply them in their own analyses of primary material, thus gaining insight into the interrelation between gender identities and different sociocultural contexts.

Gender is a pervasive concept in our everyday existence. We live in a society in which even shower products are assigned masculine or feminine qualities. In this course, we will read a range of theoretical texts proposing different ways of thinking critically about gender. In particular, we will be interested in theorists who examine the ways in which conceptualizations of gender have been used to create, cement, or question hierarchies. We will also engage with a range of different materials – from advertisement to film/tv to poetry and narrative –, asking how different theoretical approaches help us to critically examine the representation of gender and gender roles in these texts.
