The Orientalism debate, as initiated by Edward Said as a critical examination of representations of the Orient in literature, has also occupied historical photography research for some time. In the seminar, a critical view of Orientalist photography will be conveyed by means of image analyses and theoretical texts. Students will learn not only the classical types and topoi of orientalist photography, but also its social and political functions. In addition to analyzing individual images, the production, cultural circulation, and reception of Orientalist photographs will be interrogated
