Developing a basic understanding and specific advanced knowledge of the lecture’s topic

Fabergé, court jeweller to the last two Russian tsars Alexander III and Nicholas II, ranges as the most famous representative of gold and silver smithing art of the 19th and 20th centuries. Often called the "Cellini of the North", his brand became the epitome of the highest artistic and technical quality of works executed. Tradition and innovation determined his work equally. Deeply anchored in historicism, he played with outstanding connoisseurship and skills on its broad palette of styles in their respective meticulously acknowledged suitability for the work, its function, its client and the specific occasion of its commission. Fabergé, his designers and his master craftsmen were also highly important in the development of the Art Nouveau style and, quite anticipating, of early Art Deco, as well as the so-called "Russian style", which was based on genuine medieval traditions. Fabergé's workshops in Saint Petersburg and Moscow created masterpieces of different kind that were and are most intriguing in his objets d'art and objets de faintaisie, including his world-famous Easter eggs for the Tsar's family.
