Biography and autobiography are among the most popular and best-selling genres of historical writing. In this BA Seminar we will explore Jewish (auto)biography as a prism through which the historical events of the time can be understood.
We will ask questions about the meaning of living and writing Jewish lives throughout history, and its relevance for us today. We will read and analyze chapters of biographical literature of Jews like King David, Jesus of Nazareth, Glikl of Hammeln, Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov, Salomon Maimon, David Ben Gurion, Hannah Arendt, Golda Meir, and more.
Course with continuous performance assessment: attendance at all sessions, participation in discussions, active collaboration, exercises, required reading, written paper, oral presentation.
Reading list will be provided.
Positive assessment of one module from the elective modules 7 to 12. The respective proof ought to be produced until the end of October 2022.
Teaching language is English. The discussion, presentations and final paper can be held and written in German.
