628011 VO Contextual Theology
winter semester 2022/2023 | Last update: 10.05.2023 | Place course on memo listTo develop awareness of the contextuality of Islamic theology in relation to Islamic normative theory (fiqh); gain an insight into the contextual approaches in Islamic tradition in the field of Islamic law and reflect on the importance of contextual Islamic theology in contemporary sociocultural circumstances.
In plural societies, where many religions, communities and cultures live together, Islamic theology is increasingly challenged to contextualize Islamic law. For this reason, after discussing the attitude of Muslim scholars to Islamic law in the modern age, the main theme of this meeting will be the changeability of Islamic law. In doing so, concepts such as e.g. tajdid (renewal), idschtihād (law-finding) and maslaha (general welfare) are treated in more detail to show how these concepts solve contemporary problems and thereby adapt Islam to specific contexts. Based on bioethical issues, such as e.g. brain death and organ transplantation will concretely show how legal problems with these concepts are being solved by Muslim scholars and intellectuals. Current bioethical topics should therefore also be presented and then the Islamic-theological evaluation of these topics by Muslim and other theologians as well as medical and bioethicists presented.
