winter semester 2022/2023 | Last update: 10.05.2023 | Place course on memo listDeepening engagement with modern Islamic law in the context of Islamic renewal movements; legal practice and legal systems in different Islamic and European countries; Islamic law and Muslims in plural societies; the legal situation of Muslims in pluralistic societies from an Islamic perspective; in-depth discussion of the areas of Islamic law Mu'āmalāt (interpersonal relationships) and their interpretation in the current European context; Sensitization to everyday conflicts and solutions in multiple societies.
Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) governs not only the interpersonal relationship (mu'âmalât), but also the relation of man to his creator (ibâdât). In the course of time, many works have emerged within the Islamic disciplines that deal with these two topics and thus have repeatedly updated Islamic law. On the basis of the reading and analysis of current texts, a deeper insight into this area of law should be given, in the light of modern knowledge and approaches, the problems and development phases of Muslims in the European context should be interpreted. Topics that will be discussed are: renewal movements in Islam from the 18th to the 20th century; Islamic law in the modern age; Secularization problems and tendencies of legal development in Islam; Idschtihad, Maslaha and Maqasid as-Sharia as a religious reform concept; Islamic law and human rights; Religious freedom, apostasy; Contemporary legal issues; Business law, ethics; Environmental ethics in Islam; Islam in Europe; Muslims in plural societies. Islamic law should also be compared with other religious and secular legal systems in order to identify local and international problems and to work out possible solutions.
