640009 PS Ancient History: Living in an Ancient City
winter semester 2022/2023 | Last update: 14.09.2023 | Place course on memo listAcquisition of basic skills for dealing with historic sources and presentations of ancient history as well as skills in presenting the newly acquired knowledge orally as well as in writing. Acquisition of basic knowledge and application of relevant methods aiding scientific research.
The proseminar introduces students to ancient historical work. Special attention is paid to the ancient historical sources and the scientific approach to them. The students work with ancient sources as well as with research literature on the topic of "Life and living in an ancient city".
The focus lies on different facets of urban life in antiquity, such as housing culture, traffic, sanitation, entertainment, religious, political, economic and social aspects, considering also gender relations. In addition, the idealised concepts of the 'beautiful' life in the city are critically questioned.
Combination of lecture, reading tasks and guided reading, exercises, short presentations and group work.
Participation during the course, exercises during the semester, written exam at the end of the semester.
Relevant literature will be announced during the course.
