Acquisition of skills for dealing with historic sources and studies in ancient history critically, as well as the competence to present the newly-gained knowledge verbally and/or in writing; Acquisition of the competence to apply methods of auxiliary sciences.

The reign of emperor Anastasius (491-518 CE) is a crucial period of time in Roman history that is still too often neglected. Many of the problems that his predecessors and successors were facing seem to fade away during his reign: Civil unrest and rebellions seem more manageable, religious strife seems less crucial, and the econocmic situation in many parts of the empire relatively stable.

During the course, we will look closer on politics, religions, and economy in these years, and contextualise them with earlier and later periods. We will make use of essential techniques of the historical method by analysing and interpreting various kinds of sources of the time. The students will lean to argue with each other, both orally and in written form. They will finish the course by writing a short essay.

Combination of lecture, reading tasks, exercises and a final essay.

Participation and short essay (4-7 pages)

Relevant literature will be announced during the course.
