640016 SE Ancient History I: Earthquakes - volcanic eruptions - tsunamis: natural disasters in antiquity and their management
winter semester 2022/2023 | Last update: 14.09.2023 | Place course on memo listAcquisition of the skills to process information (sources and/or research literature) based on the scientific rules of the discipline and writing and presenting a historic paper on a selected topic of the sub-discipline.
Strengthening of subject‐specific skills by examination of a selected topic from the field of Ancient History with special emphasis on methodology.
Similar to present times, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, heavy rains or lasting droughts were also part of ancient real life. The seminar deals with the question, how ancient cultures - especially Greeks and Romans - managed such natural disasters. As scientific knowledge about the causes of these events was widely missing, strategies seem quite irrational (at least from a modern point of view), e.g. the sacrifice of humans. These sources have to be read critically. Therefore, an important part of the seminar will be the joint analysis of the source material (texts, monuments etc.).
Joint reading and discussion of ancient sources about natural disasters (in translation); critical evluation and interpretation of the sources; contextualisation with the help of secondary soures; introductory lecture by the instructor.
Active participation in discussions, oral presentation and discussion of a selected topic, joint creation of a source collection (manual) about natural disasters in atiquity.
