Students acquire the instruments for understanding and evaluating different sources and media. They use their competences in critical use of media and sources and are able to use their source-critical skills for developing own questions.

Based on an examination of the notebook of Emperor Frederick III and the topics coveresd in it, the course aims to deepen knowledge in historical auxiliary sciences with a focus on paleography, as well as to provide an excercise in source criticism and interpretation.

Teaching the most important methods and tools for identifying, reading, interpreting and describing medieval sources. The development of the theoretical basics is supplemented by practical exercises using medieval originals from the Tyrolean Provincial Archives. Furthermore, an overview of the development of writing in the German language area since the High Middle Ages is given. At the same time, a typological overview of relevant source genres is aimed at on the basis of the examples considered.

Frontal teaching, common reading and editing of charters; homeworks.

Homework, participation, exam at the end of the semester.
