Among the many “turns” which have stimulated historical scholarship for about 50 years, the “pictorial turn” (W.J.T. Mitchell, 1992) or “iconic turn” (G. Boehm, 1994) is probably one of the most enduring. Against this backdrop, the tutorial conveys insights into the wide range of modern visual sources and into associated research debates.
