Wars have become very close and visible again. They are far from being distant in the past. Along with wars always come cruelties like raping and killing of women and men. What does war get men into? Are all men acting alike under the signum of war - or does it depend on different starting conditions? And how successful is post-war life?
In this course, we are investigating different possibilities and drafts of masculinity via analyzing diaries and letters of soldiers in modern times until the twentieth century. This touches not only violence, but also the topos of comradeship, questions of hegemonial masculinities and national attributions.
The seminar assists and supports the Bachelor's Thesis regarding working skills and content. Short lectures, reading, discussing of articles and interactive presentations by the students.
Course with continuous assessment: regular attendance of the sessions, exercises, active participation in discussions, interactive oral presentations, written concept and Bachelor's Thesis (about 30 pages).
