At the end of the course the students will have understood the basic concepts of solid state physics and will be able to apply them in solving problems.

Reminder Physics III: bonds, crystals, symmetries, structure analysis

  1. Electronic bands
  2. Electron transport
  3. Semiconductors
  4. Magnetism
  5. Superconductivity
Tablet PC presentation. Hand written lecture notes will be posted on OLAT as pdf files.
  • Written exam near end of term or near beginning of the following term
  • Depending on the current topic there will be easy online reading quizzes roughly every other week. The maximum number of points from these quizzes counts as 10% bonus points for the written exam.
  • Any further exams will be oral.

 

  • For the most part the class will follow Gross & Marx, Festkörperphysik, Oldenburg, 2012. This book is available as an ebook from within the university network.
  • Ashcroft, N. W. & Mermin, D. N., Solid State Physics,  Brooks Cole, 1976. This is the standard college level textbook but somewhat old-fashioned.

The lecture requires a lot of prior knowledge of quantum mechanics, so the participants should have heard Theoretical Physics II (quantum theory).
