720260 SE Seminar to special problems in basic psychological research: Discipline Processes & Systems in Social Psychology
winter semester 2022/2023 | Last update: 28.04.2022 | Place course on memo listAfter taking this course, students will be informed about research on how the discipline of social psychology operates, and how its processes and systems produce, disseminate, and apply (or not) scientific knowledge. Students will be able to link the research cycle in social psychology to real-world social and political trends in the world around them. They will be able to synthesize information from various perspectives on governance, political economy, academic and publishing industries, social psychological associations, the histories and trends of social hierarchies and scientific philosophy, and lay perceptions of the discipline, and use this knowledge to be able to critically evaluate the field in general, in their nation, and their own approaches to social psychological research and teaching, and to reflect on needed reforms in these settings.
This seminar will examine the ways in which the discipline of social psychology operates across many levels and domains. The course aims to provide a thorough understanding of the dominant 1) philosopy of science 2) political economy, 3) academic and publishing industries, 4) social psychological associations, 5) links to governance, societal trends, and culture, and 6) how social psychology is viewed and applied in society. Material will be drawn from research in a variety of disciplines as well as conversations with social psychologists from around the world.

Examinations using continuous assessment based on regular written and oral contributions from the participants.
