At the end of this course participants will have an overview of the current debate about a possible crisis in the progress of psychological science (also known as replication crisis or crisis of confidence) from different perspectives. They will be able to critically analyse these perspectives and the problems in the practice of research that they highlight. And they will be able to point to resources with which these problems can be tackled.

In the past years it became aparent that a number of findings in psychology do not seem to be as stable as first thought, because when the studies are repeated the original results cannot always be replicated. This kickstarted a discussion about what has been referred to as the replication crisis. However, there is no consensus about the causes of the crisis, or about which causes are most relevant. They concern e.g. the uncritical use of significance tests, too small samples, questionable practices in data collection and analysis, lack of transparency in the research process, and too little consideration of the role of theory and formal modelling in research. These problems require different approaches for their solution. We explore different perspectives and solution proposals drawing on examples from cognitive science. Note: This course consists of 8 somewhat longer sessions and ends in December 2022.
