The participants of the course will obtain a comprehensive perspective on modern NIR spectroscopy with a focus on the interrelation of key elements: spectra interpretation, novel miniaturized and portable instrumentation, data-analysis (chemometrics), and applications. The course will place the focal points on the topics that are not covered during the basic courses in analytical chemistry.

NIR spectroscopy is a potent analytical and QC tool used in diverse branches of industry; e.g. in the analysis of pharmaceuticals, natural resources, advanced materials. Recent key advancements in fundamental science, technology and methods have opened up new perspectives for this technique.

This lecture will outline a comprehensive perspective on modern NIR spectroscopy with a focus on the interrelation of key elements: spectra interpretation, novel miniaturized and portable instrumentation, data-analysis (chemometrics), and applications. The course will place the focal points on the topics that are not covered during the basic courses in analytical chemistry. Uniquely, it will include an overview of the fundamental theory and physicochemical principles of NIR spectroscopy, presented in easily accessible manner, which is not available from current textbooks. The course combines a lecture and a short practical exercise, during which the students will obtain training in the interpretation of NIR spectra and developing practical analytical method based on innovative miniaturized NIR spectrometers.

Course outline:

1.    Lecture: introduction to all the key topics relevant for successful application of NIR spectroscopy.

2.  Practical exercise: interpretation of NIR spectra, identification of chemical compounds from their spectra, development of analytical application using miniaturized, portable NIR spectrometers.
