After successfully mastering the contents of this course the students are able to write simple programs in Python. They understand the basic concepts of programming and relevant problem solving techniques from computer science. In this way students know programming approaches for applications in engineering and natural sciences.

The focus of the course is on learning the basic concepts of programming and methods for solving computer science problems, especially with applications in the engineering and natural sciences. With an introduction to the Python programming language, the writing of computer programs for practical problems and the underlying data structures and algorithms are discussed. Topics covered: Basics of programming (statements, variables, data structures, control flow and functions) and concepts of practical computer science (computer-aided generation of graphics and sound, formulation and implementation of algorithms, structured analysis and classification of large amounts of data).

Interactive lectures and practical tutorials on the computer.

Continuous assessment (based on regular written and/or oral contribution by participants).

The literature to be used as an optional supplement to the VU will be discussed during the first lecture.
