Students are able to master simple design and planning tasks. They are able to analyse a design task, to formulate an architectural programme, to create a spatial concept and to translate it into an architectural design of a high aesthetic level.

Teaching the different phases of a design process based on the guided working on architectural tasks, training of personal creative ability; Imparting of design as a complex decision-making process and integration of design-relevant influencing factors.

Naschpark - spaces of fusion  (instructed by Viktoria Sandor)

As Vitruvius, the famous Roman architect from the 1st century BC, noted:

"Let the architect be educated, skilful with the pencil, instructed in geometry, know much history, have followed the philosophers with attention, understand music, have some knowledge of medicine, know the opinions of the jurists, and be aquanted with astronomy and the theory of the heavens...."

In the next E1 design studio we will focus on learning how to deal with "the many" elements and complexities of architecture. To this end, we will focus on the collaborative design of "Naschpark”.

"Naschpark" will be our design proposal for the redevelopment of the large parking area next to the Naschmarkt (Vienna's best known market), which is currently causing much controversy between the city administration and the residents. While the city has proposed building a market hall on the site, residents are fighting for green, open space. During the semester, we will join the debate with our collaborative design proposal for a green park with new spaces of FUSION: urban kitchens, eateries, areas for al fresco, fleemarket etc.

Our keyword for the design explorations will be FUSION. Fusion is the process or result of joining two or more things together to form a single entity. To find new spatial solutions for the site, we will merge, blend, and fuse different styles, typologies, contexts and constraints. As a result of this practice, each group (2-3 students/group) will develop a “Naschpark” segment (fusion food park) and build new skills to push their limits in dealing with complexity.

The semester will be divided into 5 phases of 3 weeks, following the pattern of Workshop - Round Table - Pinup+Dinner. In the different sessions, we will introduce techniques such as text to Image generation with AI, physical 3D sketching, digitisation with kinects, still and animated visualization and architectural drawing.

Study trip:

As railjet can take us directly to the project site, we will have a study trip to Vienna, including a site visit and additional cultural programs.

Course examination according to § 7, statute section on "study-law regulations".

Will be discussed in the first lesson.

successful completion of compulsory modules 1, 2 and 3.

This course is coupled with the course: 847307 SE Architectural Visualisation.

Since our design methodology will incorporate various AI tools, it is highly recommended that you take the course: 822102 SE Discourses in Architecture Theory: Machine Learning in Architecture.

Meetings: Studio meetings take place weekly on Wednesdays and Thursdays in person.
