930009 Gender, Ethnicity and Culture:
winter semester 2022/2023 | Last update: 30.06.2023 | Place course on memo listIn the lecture series, different disciplinary and theoretical perspectives on policies, regulations, norm(alization)s of bodies as well as practices and figurations of bodies as terrain of resistance will be taught. Students will be introduced to multiple analytical perspectives to grasp the relationship between bodies and power in history and our present time as well as in different geopolitical contexts. The aim is that students become familiar with historical and contemporary forms of representation of gendered, racialized, dis/abilized bodies in different systems of cultural symbolization
The first block "Bodies and Social Orders" deals with the question how bodies legitimize domination, gendered, sexualized, (post)colonial, ability-centered and classist social orders. Here, the issues include historical constructions of the body, the constitution of racialized bodies under colonialism, bio-economies, and state body politics. The second block deals with "dimensions of norm(alization)s of bodies" - among others in law, in modes of subjectivation, through capitalism and colonialism or in the history of psychiatry. The third part focuses on the relationship between "bodies and resistance" - in social movements, theory formation, literature and art.
