Gain of basic knowledge in bioinformatics.

Attain fundamental insights into sequence analysis and major biological databases.

Overview and understanding of high throughput data analyses.

Introduction into Bioinformatics:

Challenges in bioinformatics and computational biology, basics in information technology, flow of biological information and transcriptional regulation.

Biological databases:

Genbank, NCBI, PubMed, UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot, ENSEMBL, structural and other molecular biology databases.

Biological sequence analyses:

Homology search using pairwise alignments, BLAST, database search, multiple sequence alignment, genome analyses, predictive methods for protein and DNA sequences, functional prediction, regulatory sequences and motif search, Hidden Markov models (HMM).

High throughput methods:

Gene expression analyses and next generation sequencing applications.

Data analyses and interpretation:

Machine learning, clustering, enrichment analyses, biological pathway and network analyses.

Lecture, assessment is based on a single examination at the end of the course.
