202118 VO Philosophy and Society: Conspiracy Theories
summer semester 2023 | Last update: 26.06.2023 | Place course on memo listFamiliarity with relevant debates; the ability to think and write critically about the topics of the class.
It seems as if more and more conspiracy theories are spreading today – alongside increasingly many claims that this or that idea is a conspiracy theory. But what are conspiracy theories? Conspiracies do indeed sometimes exist (cf. corruption in politics), so some claims of conspiracies are justified. When are such claims justified, and when are they not? Is there a danger that the overhasty application of the word "conspiracy theory" risks undermining important social critiques? Using tools and literature from contemporary philosophy and philosophy of science, we will address these and other questions about conspiracy theories. We will also have the opportunity to apply these theoretical tools in relation to common so-called conspiracy theories from contemporary public discourse.
Lectures, class discussion and short essays.
Written exam.
