The lecture deals with the most important stations in the history of the celebration of the eucharist: from the domestic celebration of the cultic meal in the earliest times to the highly ritualized two-part Mass (liturgy of the word and eucharistic meal celebration) of late antiquity; the new understanding of the eucharist since the early Middle Ages and the emergence of the private mass; the developments during and after the Reformation; the ecumenical reforms in the 20th century.
