The EU as a Global Player: the Indo-Pacific as a challenge against the background f the Sino-US Rivalry
The EU strives to position itself as a global player despite the ongoing war in the Ukraine at its borders. Since 2016 the Asia-Pacific and now the Indo-Pacific has moved into focus, for economic, political and security reasons as well as the ongoing competition/rivalry between the US and China. The hotspots Hongkong, Taiwan, South and East China Sea, the Korean Peninsula have potentially global implications. India seeks to find its position in the Indo-Pacific as well as in the triangle with China and Russia. Solving the global threats like climate change, the re-organisation of value, production chains as well as the competition about emerging technologies takes place in this region. Mini- and plurilateral agreements in trade and security cooperation risk the multilateral system and cooperation is key to adapt the present world order, under duress because of the war of aggression by Russia.
