408094 PS Rural and Regional Sociology
summer semester 2023 | Last update: 22.02.2023 | Place course on memo listCurr. 2021 § 5 (1) 12: The students can reflect the current status of the debates on the dynamics of social change in agriculture and rural areas and describe their interactions with social developments (in Austria, Europe and in countries in the south). They will be able to reflect on and analyse processes of urban-rural relationships as well as the fundamentals of regional development processes using social science theories.
The seminar provides practical insights into the situation of agriculture in its various manifestations (agro-industry, smallholder agriculture, subsistence farming) and regional development processes in the Global North and South. Both, theoretical approaches and empirical research studies are used to highlight the realities of life, challenges, interdependencies and contradictions. Special emphasis is given to a gender-sensitive approach to the topics discussed as well as on the significance of the climate crisis for life in rural areas.
