418210 VU Media Dynamics and Social Change
summer semester 2023 | Last update: 02.05.2023 | Place course on memo listGraduates are enabled to question the tension between communication, media technologies and democracy. They are able to locate processes triggered by technological advances in terms of media history, to name their current specifics and to identify relevant fields of action.
Providing basic knowledge about theories and models of media dynamics and the complexity of social transformation processes associated with digitisation, medialisation, globalisation and individualisation.
In this course you will receive an introduction to media dynamics and social change. We begin with an in-depth examination of the key terms "dynamics" and "change" - first in relation to the media, then in relation to society. We ask the question of what came first - the change in the media or the societal change? This is how we begin to understand the interaction between the two systems. Then, we look at current research results on various media dynamics and take a look at processes of social change that may be related to media change.
Similar to a lecture, this course centers around the provision of input by the lecturer. Nevertheless, your active participation in this course is expected (e.g. iparticipation in discussions and the submission of assignments).
I will check the learning progress with multiple written assignments throughout the semester.
