Students know the basic conceptual tools and are able to develop suitable questions for corpora. They reflect critically on the methods presented.

Corpus linguistics deals with the automated analysis of linguistic data. With the advance of digitization, it has become an important tool in linguistics and the digital humanities. Never before has so much linguistic data been freely available in digital form.

With this data, we can analyze language use on an empirical basis to discover changes over time or typical usage patterns in a data-driven way. The lecture introduces modern corpus linguistics, explains its development and basic concepts, and shows practical examples of application of corpus linguistic methods.
