To deal with literary texts reflecting on the methodology and to develop a well-founded understanding of literary texts using meaningful examples.

Literature in Austria 1900-1918:

In this course we will deal with narrative, dramatic and lyrical texts by canonical authors. The focus will be on stories by Franz Kafka ("Das Urteil", "In der Strafkolonie", "Beim Bau der chinesischen Mauer") as well as texts by Arthur Schnitzler, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Rainer Maria Rilke and Robert Musil. We will examine their formal peculiarities or innovations, the intertextual references, the reception of myths, as well as the interrelationship between literature and the psychoanalysis that emerged around 1900. The texts will be analyzed in their respective sociocultural contexts.

Shared reading and discussion of texts, group work, discussion of written homework assignments.

Preparatory reading between the sessions, regular homework (especially answering questions on the literary texts), cooperation, written work (approx. 10 pages).
