• Students will be introduced to the theory and terminology of poetry analysis; they will be able to apply these methods to a wide range of poetic texts from the English Renaissance to the 21^st century.
• Students will be able to describe and discuss the socio-political and cultural background of the selected poems and will be able to situate the texts in their respective context.

• Students will enhance their ability to perform close readings and to critically discuss relevant research.

This lecture offers a survey of British poetry from the early modern period to the 21^st century. It provides an overview of key texts and genres as well as central developments in literary and cultural history. It introduces students to the methods of poetry analysis and focuses on applying these techniques in close readings and discussions of selected poems.
