Students gain first insights into the theories, approaches and methodologies of British and Anglophone Cultural Studies and learn to apply these to a range of textual, socio-political and historical examples.

Topics, amongst others are: definitions of ‘Culture/ culture’ and concepts and theories of ‘Cultural Studies’; identity and difference; semiotics and representation; nationality, history, and politics; cultural analyses of space; negotiations of cultural values; selfhood and society. 

Presentations, in-class discussions, attendance at first session is obligatory.

Final written examination, written assignments, active participation in class.

Primary and secondary literature will be provided via OLAT.

Students are recommended not to take this course in the first semester.

This introduction and its forms of examination is designed to be taught in presence. Should the Covid-situation require us to do so, we will move to a digital format.
