619026 VO Music in Public Relations: Anti-Judaism and Anti-Semitism in Music
summer semester 2023 | Last update: 11.01.2023 | Place course on memo listAs an important component of cultural identities, music is often a means in conflicts and is used to send all kinds of messages. Spread in all spheres of life, anti-Semitism became deeply rooted in music as well - especially in Europe. From the Middle Ages and mocking of the synagogue chants, over Wagner's pamphlet "Jewry in Music", to the farthest extreme that culminated (but not ended) with the Holocaust, and to the modern forms, such as white power or neo-Nazi music, anti-Semitism in music has its own history that will be discussed in this course.
The participants will deal with the musical anti-Semitism and learn about its forms and ideological backgrounds through reading and analysing select scholarly texts. An exhibition is also planned, for which the participants will work on the characteristics of the anti-Semitism in the history of the music life of Tyrol.
Seminar, along with work on an accompanying exhibition.
...will be discussed in the course of the semester.
