Students deal with new themes from the field of contemporary history. They understand and evaluate them as well as argument with regards to scientific dynamics and trends. They understand the strengths and weaknesses of the different methodological approaches. They gain competences in independent formulating of questions and argumentations.

The focus will be put on the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century: i.e. the seminar will deal and start with the colonial past history and independence via civil war and slavery to changing immigration policies, racism, New Deal, world wars, civil rights movement and present populism / nativism.

Lecture, reading, discussion.

Regular attendance, active participation in discussions, required readings, oral presentation, paper.

Will be provided at the beginning of the course.
